The application of buttons to an upholstered piece where pleats or stitch lines do not run between the buttons. Float buttoning is a useful technique for adding some traditional detail whilst also serving the purpose of tensioning the fabric, especially useful when finishing a curved inside back on a piece and needing to keep tension on the fabric.
